People searched for lunch specials, and the site had no lunch page

In short

Google was already showing the site for lunch searches at position 5.4, and there was nothing on the site to answer them.

What I did

Search Console showed lunch searches: 1,999 impressions in 12 months at an average position of 5.4, but only 3 clicks. The site had no lunch page at all. I built one from the real menu data: 26 lunch items with their actual prices, delivery and pickup times, a link to catering for office orders, and 6 FAQs.

What changed

In the five weeks after it went live, the page did not appear in Google even once. It loaded, was set to index and was in the sitemap, but no page on the site linked to it. In October I linked it from the homepage deals and the menu page. Too early to see the effect.

What you should do

In Search Console, look for searches where you get impressions but have no page that answers them. Those are pages Google is already asking you to build.
How long it took

About a day

A landing page is a page built to answer one specific search.

Why it matters

A position of 5.4 means Google already linked this business with lunch. People searching for lunch saw it and did not click, because no result promised a lunch menu.

I built the page from the same data the ordering system uses, so the prices on the page match what customers pay.

How to check your own site

  • In Search Console, open the Queries tab and filter for a topic word, such as lunch, price or near me.
  • For each group of searches, ask: do I have one page that answers exactly this?

What this changed in how I work

A page nothing links to can sit unseen for weeks. I now add links to every new page on the day it goes live.
