I retitled a page that was seen 39,586 times a year, and four weeks later it still gets almost no clicks

In short

The page ranked in the top five for many questions but almost nobody clicked. A new title and an order box did not change that.

What I did

One recipe-style page on a restaurant client's site was the third most seen page on the site: 39,586 impressions and 29 clicks in 12 months. It ranked between positions 1.8 and 5.5 for question searches about what goes on that pizza, with zero clicks on those. On 28 August I rewrote its title and description for the main search and added an order box with the real product and price.

What changed

In the four weeks before the change (31 July to 27 August) the page had 2,554 impressions, 0 clicks and position 16.8. From 7 September to 4 October it had 5,254 impressions and 2 clicks at position 10.0. Google showed it twice as often and higher, but clicks went only from 0 to 2.

What you should do

If a page ranks well for questions and gets no clicks, check whether Google is answering the question right on the results page. A new title cannot fix that.
How long it took

About an hour

A zero click search is one that the searcher finishes on Google, because the results already show the answer.

Why it matters

Questions like what is on a meat pizza have a short answer. Most likely Google shows it right in the results, so the searcher reads it and moves on. A better title does not give them a reason to visit.

The result is still useful: it tells me to stop spending time on this page’s title and look for searches that need a visit.

How to check your own site

  • Search your page’s top questions yourself and see what Google shows above the results.
  • If the answer is already there, aim the page at a different search.

What this changed in how I work

When the answer is a short list of toppings, the searcher does not need my page. I now pick the page's goal from what people cannot get in the results.
