FailuresSchema and structured data

136 of my published articles told Google they were last updated before they were published

In short

Scheduled WordPress posts kept the date of their last bulk edit, so their updated date came weeks before their publish date.

What I did

I drafted my articles in June and scheduled them to go live over the following weeks. While they waited I made bulk edits to all of them, one of which added an author box to every article. In August I checked the dates: 136 published posts had a last updated date earlier than their publish date, and 78 still-scheduled posts carried the same problem. 209 articles shared one updated date, 27 June, the day of one of those bulk edits. The same wrong date was in the structured data Google reads.

What changed

I set each published post's updated date to its publish date and fixed the schema, so no article claims to be updated before it existed. I also added a small piece of code that sets a scheduled post's updated date to its publish date when it goes live, so the posts still scheduled correct themselves.
What you should do

If you schedule posts in WordPress, open a few after they go live and view the page source. Check that dateModified is not earlier than datePublished.
How long it took

About an hour to find and fix

Every article carries two dates: when it was published and when it was last updated. Google can read both from the page and from structured data.

Why it matters

An updated date that comes before the publish date is impossible, so it looks like a mistake or like automation. When 209 articles share the same impossible date, it shows they were all edited in one batch.

WordPress keeps the date of the last edit. A post written in June and set to publish in August still says it was updated in June.

How to check your own site

  • Open a scheduled post after it goes live, view the source, and search for dateModified.
  • Compare it with datePublished. The updated date should never be the earlier one.

What this changed in how I work

WordPress does not change the updated date when a scheduled post goes live, so I added code that does, and I check the dates on every bulk-scheduled batch.
